Intermediate Oil Burner Service - 5 Days - $605 (Includes NORA Oilheat Technicians Manual for which NORA charges $28.)

The material covered in this session is of sufficient scope to equip a technician with the knowledge needed to properly service most domestic oil fired heating units. Subjects include fuel pumps, booster pumps, oil deaerators, motors, transformers / igniters, combustion chambers, nozzles, electrodes, draft regulators, chimneys and controls for air, water, and steam systems. Proper diagnosis of problems using meters and gauges is integral to the coverage of the specific components. Combustion testing and its relation to clean, efficient, reliable, oil burner operation is stressed. Understanding controls and wiring is a major part of this course and students practice on wiring exercise boards along with primary control boards that test their understanding of the problems that can occur with these systems. “Real world bugs” built into the lab units require teams of students to diagnose and repair problems encountered in the field.

Introduction to Gas Heating

Subjects examined are: properties of gas, BTU content, and carbon monoxide concerns, the use of manometers to test gas pressures, gas pipe sizing, pressure regulators, motorized gas valves, diaphragm gas valves, solenoid gas valves, testing thermocouples and powerpile generators, redundant gas valves, determining proper firing rate by clocking meters, spark ignition and hot surface ignition diagnostics, orifice sizing and pressure relationships and burner adjustments.  Hands on troubleshooting problems are included in this course.

Heat Loss/ Gain & Systems Design

For those who will be designing and selling heating systems.  ACCA Manual J for heat loss/heat gain, ACCA Manual D for duct selection and sizing and IBR Manual 200 for hydronic piping design are utilized to familiarize you with the proper method for sizing equipment and designing the distribution system to industry accepted standards.

Fundamentals of Air Conditioning – 4 Days - $705

Heating technicians who wish a fundamental knowledge of refrigeration concepts and field testing of domestic air-conditioning equipment will want to attend this session. The basic refrigeration cycle is explained along with correct pumping down and charging methods, evacuation by micron gauge, troubleshooting refrigerant pressures with manifold gauges and electrical testing of compressors, controls, and components such as capacitors. Reclaiming of refrigerant is discussed and demonstrated. Like other equipment-oriented courses, this class utilizes hands-on training methods though due to time constraints it is impossible for each student to recover and reclaim each air conditioner.

Advanced Technician - 3 days - $365.00

Subjects in this course are for those experienced servicemen and service department managers who wish to go beyond the intermediate level into more advanced domestic and light commercial systems. It is assumed that the student is familiar with the concepts presented in the Fundamentals and Intermediate courses. Problems associated with the steam heating systems are included along with the next level of burner control systems (Fireye UVM and TFM and Honeywell RA890 and R4795). We expand beyond the wiring schematics covered in the Intermediate course (both internal and external) and cover single phase and three phase electricity. Venting issues such as building vacuums, chimney venting, and power venting are discussed. Correct definitions of input, output, and net rating along with estimating fuel consumption by ASHRAE formula are explained. An introduction to problems related to duct leakage is presented.

A BASIC COURSE IN RADIANT PANEL

HEATING SYSTEMS

A true primer for those with little or no knowledge of radiant heating. This entry level course will educate you to what radiant heating is about and the basics of design, equipment and installation. It is the beginning point for anyone wanting to enter the radiant business or just wants to know more than consumer level information

Fundamentals of LP Operations

Day 1 Physical properties of LP, uses of LP, proper use of code books (NFPA 54 & 58). Introduction to the proper use of equipment - tools & meters. Construction of containers (DOT vs. ASME) and valves.

Day 2 Hands on exercises in purging tanks (vacuum or vapor purging), evacuation of DOT & ASME containers, and visual recertification of containers. Proper filling techniques will be practiced. An exercise in how to handle overfills will be conducted.

Day 3 Distribution system design, pipe sizing and proper regulator tank sizing are all subjects covered. Each student will also work with the approved methods of making fittings (plastic, copper and steel). Pressure testing according to standards is discussed and students are required individually to demonstrate their proficiency to the instructor.

Day 4 Venting - design and sizing issues are covered. The Gas Check program is explained, reviewed and the test is administered.

Advanced Electrical – 2 Days - $245.00

Intended for techs that have at least two years field experience, this course is designed to explain and demonstrate the differences between the old electro-mechanical controls and the current generation of “digital” devices that have become standard in the HVAC industry. Reliability and simplicity were a given with the older controls though the level of sophistication was not great. Now we routinely use advanced devices that are capable of doing much more than before but at the same time are affected by external influences that would never bother the standard controls! Issues of proper grounding, flame signals measured in millionths of an amp, voltage spikes, electronic “noise”, non-linear loads and their “gremlins”, why point to point voltage checks are vital – these and other concerns will be explored. These sessions are being conducted by Ed Conklin, the inventor and producer of all the innovative simulator boards and “bugged” controls used in the intermediate gas and oil schools so any technician that has a few years field experience should benefit greatly from this session.

Fundamentals of Oil Burner Tuneups – 3 Days -$365

The fundamentals course is for beginners, either delivery people or those who have no practical experience. Components of the burner – from the old 1725 rpm units to modern 3450 retention head burners will be examined. Head exchangers for both boilers and furnaces will be examined with the locations of cleanouts described. A printed step-by-step tuneup procedure will be given to each student as well as other pertinent reference material. Combustion testing instruments will be explained and used. During the session, students will be assigned to small teams (three to four students per group) and in the company of an instructor, will travel to an actual local customer sites to perform tuneups on boilers and furnaces.

Gas Furnace / Boiler Troubleshooting – 2 Days - $245

Based on attendee feedback we are condensing the information presented in what was formerly a four day course so that we can concentrate on equipment failure issues – the biggest concern of the students. Subjects covered are: trouble shooting of standing pilots, thermocouples, and powerpile generators, trouble shooting of spark ignited pilots and troubleshooting of hot surface ignition systems. Our simulator boards have fourteen real world problems that will give a technician a rigorous work out in service techniques needed for today’s comparatively complicated gas furnaces and boilers. We also examine the operational problems caused by improper venting and combustion air piping mistakes. We would expect a technician taking this course to be familiar with properties of gas, i.e. characteristics related to combustion and explosion, BTU content, and carbon monoxide concerns, the use of manometers to test gas pressures, and determining proper firing rate by clocking meters. Data in this course is applicable to either LP or natural gas.
